Title: "The Experiment"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 1983

Summary: Donna loves helping Jon learn how to control his powers, but she's surprised by his latest idea.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: This fic is a gift to [personal profile] romanajo123 because the idea -- specifically the last few things that Jon says -- comes from a discussion we had earlier this year, way back near the beginning I think, about how a person will typcially only work hard to do something if there's something they really, really want at the end.

This was an interesting challenge for me because for the most of the latter half, Jon and Donna do not move and can't see each other's faces, so I felt that I had to keep the visual description to a minimum: no gestures, no facial expressions. It's rather a dry read, but then it's rather a dry situation.

Title: "Circular Logic"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Fourteenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 1538

Summary: The Doctor is talking about circles. Donna thinks he's talking nonsense.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes:

I'm coming in just under the wire for my "post a story a month" thing, at least in Pacific Daylight Time. I wanted to call this "Circular Time", but I didn't want to sully the title of the excellent BF audio of that name.

I'd actually written a completely different story for this month, a Blue Rain thing, and I got the first draft done a week ago, but on the first editing read-through, I realized that it was a piece of complete gosa. It was 1.6k words, and the first half was unnecessary and the last quarter was dense. I could salvage it by rewriting the second half, but honestly, the main idea wasn't all that great in the first place.

But luckily, we happened to watch "The Runaway Bride" for the first time in probably five or six years. (My husband just started to pull random blu-rays from the DW shelf and pop in an episode from whatever he grabs; we're currently on "Terror of the Autons".) And that got me thinking about how David Tennant and Catherine Tate couldn't possibly have dreamed that they'd be playing the same characters (more or less for Tennant) seventeen years later. That's where this story came from.

It's not particularly well-written or well-edited, as I only had a few days to work on it AND my days have been filled with Guild Wars 2's new expansion, but here it is.

Just as a note about timing: this story is set on Christmas Eve 2024, and so the Doctor's statement about having met Donna seventeen years earlier is accurate, as they met on Christmas Eve 2007. (Series 1 after "Aliens of London" was in 2006 and Series 2 was in 2007, so "The Runaway Bride" must have been Christmas Eve 2007.)

Title: "Surprise!"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Fifth Doctor, Vislor Turlough, Nyssa of Traken, Tegan Jovanka
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 734

Summary: The Doctor's about as good at repairing the TARDIS as he ever was.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: I am cheating here. I've been working on a different fic but there's no way I'll have it done for posting this month, so I started looking in my WIPs for something small to quickly finish and post, and I found this. I know that I've posted it somewhere before, like for a prompt fest, but I can't figure out where, and it wasn't on AO3 or Teaspoon. So, I spent the last couple of days editing/revising and have now posted it officially.

I also had help. I'm here catsitting for my sister, and just now, as I was doing final edits, Rosie walked across the keyboard and deleted about ten paragraphs. She is an aggressive editor. Thank Bast for ctrl-Z.

Title: "Shoetopia"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Nerys
Pairing(s): Tenth Doctor/Donna Noble
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 2415

Summary: Blue Rain AU. Donna and Nerys go shopping. Jon carries the bags.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: Misquoting Donna from "Death and the Queen": Not my best story. Not my worst.

Nine years now, and I'm still planning (but not actually executing) more for Blue Rain, so this one just moves the characters along so that if I do ever get to the things I want to do, people will understand why some things are so different. It's otherwise not remarkable.

Just like with my David AU, I have things I want to do here, but so much that needs to be written first before I can proceed. Sigh. Too many dreams, not enough time or motivation.

Title: "Pizza, Booze, Telly"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: David Tennant, Will Sampson (OC)
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 2053

Summary: (The Actor, AU #2) It's pizza night and David's turn to choose what to watch.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: This one started a long time ago. I knew I wanted to establish that Will has seen Doctor Who (at least series 1-4) and is familiar with the Doctor's lives and faces, and I wrote a few paragraphs of different parts of that first evening. I picked this back up a couple of weeks ago, wrote out other things I wanted them to discuss, then stitched it together.

I plan to write another story along the same lines, of Will's and David's comments during different episodes, but that'll be quite a bit down the road.

You know, I really need to differentiate my tags between David the character and DT the real person...

Title: "Style over Substance"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Melanie Bush
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 915

Summary: This ideal world is wrong and Mel is going to fix it.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: I decided, who needs editing? Though honestly, this "story" (i.e. not a story in any sense of the word) isn't going to get any better with all the editing in the world. It was just an exercise in comedic timing in prose form, sparked by my husband's question of "What do you think Mel did in that elevator on the way up to her big entrance?"

Also, apparently I subscribe to the "only capitalize prepositions in titles when they're five letters or more" rule. I agonized over that capitalization far longer than I'd like to admit.

Title: "Mothers and Daughters"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Sylvia Noble, Donna Noble
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 3349

Summary: On a rainy night fifteen years ago, Sylvia's world was turned upside down and she lost her daughter. Today, after three days of the world flipping over again, she has gained her daughter back.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: Wow, two works posted this month! Though I just realized that I never posted my other one here, so I better do that.

Anyway, this isn't much of a story. It's just a scene, a conversation. When I read the novelization of "The Star Beast" by Gary Russell, I was fascinated by the characterization of Sylvia. She'd already been the star of the episode, both by the writing and by Jacqueline King's excellent portrayal, but Gary added another layer to her by discussing her difficulties over the last fifteen years. And then, he also tied Sylvia and Donna back to Beautiful Chaos, my favorite DW novel, where Sylvia had also gotten additional exploration.

Thus, I really wanted to explore the connections between the two novels, as well as the aftermath of "The Giggle", because despite how optimistically the episode ended, you know the world was left in a state of disaster. I really couldn't not write this snippet, seeing as how I am such a Gary Russell fangirl and I love writing episode aftermaths. I only wish that this could have been part of an actual significant work, and not just a random unconnected slice-of-life scene. (Though, it's not really slice-of-life, unless random gods throw the world into a blender every day. Which I suppose they do in the DW universe.)

Title: "Real Science"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Ace McShane, Hex Schofield
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 985

Summary: Hex learns about science and why Ace loves it.

Notes: Written for the "chemistry" challenge (#257) at [community profile] fandomweekly.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: To be entirely honest, I wrote this in order to portray a scientist like they really are, as opposed to the stereotype we see everywhere in the media. Even though Ace loves explosives and explosions, she couldn't have gotten to the point of inventing nitro-9 and retaining a full set of limbs without rigorous preparation, attention to detail, and stringent safety protocols. So, she's verifying every last digit before starting to experiment; she's isolating her experiment in the right environment and even there, she's putting on safety glasses though they're not technically needed, and she's not allowing Hex to distract her from her work. She's not even wearing a white lab coat -- the things she's working on aren't going to splash on her regular clothes and ruin them, so she doesn't need one.

Yes, she really shouldn't drinking from lab glassware, but not because it's inherently dangerous (lab glassware needs to be very clean, because impurities will alter your experiments) -- it's because if you are working with other glassware, it's really easy to get your drink mixed up with your experiment. But, two things: 1) she wasn't working with any other liquids, and 2) chemists are also human and do stupid things like this. And it lampshaded the usual image everyone has of chemists, always working with vials of brightly colored liquid.

But, I'm still keeping with my story-per-month pace, even if some of them are stupidly short. I've been slaving over a WIP for a while now but it's been slow progress. Soon, I hope.

Title: "How to Fight a God in Three Easy Lessons"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: The TARDIS, Fourteenth Doctor, Donna Noble
Pairing(s): None
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 1585

Summary: The TARDIS' uninvited passenger is waking, and the Doctor isn't prepared.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: Two fics this month (so far)! Though the last one really doesn't count and I didn't even post it here.

Basically, my husband and I had a lot of questions about how things went down during the 60th and the last season, and after coming up with answers that satisfied us (i.e. a dual headcanon), I decided that writing a story about them would be more fun and interesting than discussing them in a meta post.

I wrote the story, then my husband reviewed it, offered suggestions, and worked with me to shore it up. While 98% of the words and the overall shape and progress of the story is mine, I definitely want to credit him here because he definitely made important contributions. He's done some proofreading on my stories before, but this time, his contribution was much more substantial.

Also, I got to practice some CSS here, something I haven't done in nearly a decade. I have no idea how I'm going to post this to Teaspoon, as they have only very basic formatting options.

Hoochy: "The Wild Wood."
Brewster: "And further than that. The river leads down to the sea, and there's a whole world out there, untamed... Now we can go out there, to this planet, and we can fight it and tame it and own it. We'll be pioneers, just like our ancestors."

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: This is the follow-up to "Dot and Bubble" that no one wanted.

Well, that's not quite true. My husband has always wanted the boat to leave the dock and immediately sink or fall off a cliff or explode... and he wanted me to write it. Thus, this story, but it is not what he wanted. (He thinks this story is awful. Good-awful.)

On the bright side, I'm still writing a fic a month.

(Blue Rain AU) Whoever said that the winter holiday season is relaxing?

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes:

I'd noticed that recently, I've been maintaining a once-a-month story-posting cadence, which is a lot more than I have been for the past few years (though admittedly, two of them were 100-word drabbles), so I thought I would try to keep that up. I opened my pile of WIPs to look for a suitable candidate to finish, and the first one was not only a holiday story, but also nearly complete - like, missing only a couple of paragraphs.

I don't actually remember writing this (other than an inkling that I once wanted to try to write a holiday story) and as I read through it, I actually had no idea how it was going to end. Luckily the ending was written, so I didn't have to try to figure it out.

Also, I figured out from the document history that I wrote this last year, not the years ago that I had assumed. From the dates, it looks like I didn't get it done in time for Christmas so I figured I'd save it for the next year. And now it's the next year. It's weeks before the holiday and I've already spent the last week in editing and rewriting, so it's ready to post early! Woohoo!

Title: "Perhaps Once More"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Fourteenth Doctor, Just This Once Tiff
Pairing(s): None

Tiff is busy. She's got too much to do during a workday, so much so that she even takes the work home. So why is she here on the doorstep of the eccentric bloke who'd tried to buy the house from her with three twenty-pound notes?

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes:

Ya know, I thought that writing a story about an episode character who had no lines and didn't show his face was as obscure as I could get. I was wrong. This is a story about a novelization character who appeared on two pages and also had no lines.

But that's how I roll. Tiff fascinated me immediately and I just needed to write this story. And I love seeing how long it takes for the hit count to reach double digits - I'm predicting a week; it'd be a month or more if I only had Tiff in the tags, but the Fourteenth Doctor will draw in a few gawkers.

I'm just going to say now, even if you know who the character is, this story probably isn't worth your time. :)

Word Count: 3724

Summary: Working on temptation and corruption in the middle of a war, Crowley attempts to prevent some collateral damage.

Read it on AO3.

A while back (months ago, not long after the second season came out at the end of July), I read a story in which the author said they'd wanted to write a story in which Aziraphale saved Crowley, probably from a Tumblr prompt to do so, because Crowley always saves Aziraphale in the show. The story didn't accomplish this at all - if I remember correctly, Aziraphale saves Crowley from boredom, and does it in a rather out-of-character way (I think by offering to take him out and help him corrupt people). The story ends there - we never get to see them actually do anything. It was very unsatisfying.

But I thought that was a great idea to work off of. Crowley's always confident he can get himself out of any situation, but there's got to be a few times where things aren't going the way he wants and he can't figure out how to right it (or perhaps, he's entirely incapable of doing so). Aziraphale appears soft and unimaginative, but he is clever and he knows how to work within the system.

So here's Aziraphale saving Crowley.

Here's the other GO fic I wrote this week. This won't get as much attention as the previous one, because it doesn't have the Aziraphale/Crowley ship tag. It's really nice actually getting something done. I'd like to write more, but I'm out of ideas for GO for now. Back to picking at WIPs. I did get a few paragraphs of one of them written on Tuesday.
