This past Tuesday was Halloween here in the U.S. It was also the regular weekly rehearsal of the concert band that I primarily play in. Thus, only about seven people showed up to rehearsal, and that number includes our two conductors, Tim and Sherry.

Hey! I'm not dead. I guess that's an accomplishment. I've been well aware that I haven't been active here, or anywhere really, for a very long time, and I've been meaning to write an entry, but I couldn't get myself to actually sit down and do it. One of the benefits of this is that I can do a better summary of the past few months using hindsight, rather than just bitching as things happened.

I will say up front that things have been pretty good in general - just very different from how they were a year ago.

Work, cos that's the major part of it )

And that's about it for now. I do want to talk about Doctor Who, but not in this post. I will say, though, that we're going to Gallifrey One in February, and we're really looking forward to it.

I actually really don't know if this summer is any more busy than last summer, but it sure feels that way.

This has been a difficult, stressful week at work. I'll talk about it some other time, when I'm not under the gun and sneaking off to post to LJ.

No, it wasn't as awesome as it sounds.

I mentioned in one of the Snowflake Challenge posts that I want to perform Doctor Who music, and that there was a story behind that. Here it is.

Things have been very busy this week. Outside of work, I've had three concerts (two different bands), one rehearsal (because one of the concerts was at the same time as the other band's rehearsal), and a game night, and tomorrow is a Stargate SG-1 fest all day. This is a bit of a strain on this introvert, let me tell you. This evening has been the only day I've had to relax. Monday night will be so nice.

Last night at concert band rehearsal, I got to play the timpani part on "Last Ride of the Pony Express"! It was the first time I got to try out playing timpani, and it was a BLAST! It's not a particularly complex part, but certainly challenging enough for me, since I'm not a percussion player (I just muck around on snare for the summer old fogey marching band). It's a lot more complex than just hitting the things at the right time - you have to learn where to hit the drum and how to make it sound like you want it to, and it's actually really hard to gauge just how loud you are compared to the rest of the band, since you stand in the back and really can't hear everyone in front of you. Anyway, I did well enough (meaning, the conductor didn't point out anything that I was explicitly doing wrong), and I might get to play timpani on a couple of other parts. I've been reading up on techniques and practice on the web, and I think I need to make myself a mute (which will be easier to handle on certain parts than trying to dampen with my hand).

I have to admit that I was completely nervous doing this. While I love playing concert music, I'm not really much of a musician - first, I don't practice, and second, I don't have a natural aesthetic sense for anything (music, art, writing; and when I go clothes shopping, I always bring my best friend along so that she can dress me), so my music, if I practice, is technically correct but not emotional at all. So, in general, I choose to play music in settings where I can hide behind the good musicians. This is why I don't play oboe. Of course, in a band or orchestra, there is only one timpani player, so it stands out. To me, this felt like I was playing a solo, something I have never done and always avoided, and my heart pounded all the way through. Adrenaline for the win!

The other big thing I've been hitting with a stick today is an outline for a story that I might try to write for NaNoWriMo. It's the same one that I had planned to do last year but had lost interest in. A friend of mine asked me what my idea was, so I wrote out a summary, and by the time I had finished that, I realized that I actually did have a full and coherent story in mind and might actually be able to do it. So now I'm editing that summary into an outline, adding in all the ideas that I wrote in my notes last year that I forgot about while writing the summary from memory. So, maybe I will actually attempt NaNoWriMo. I'm not sure the story is long enough, but I might as well try. This will all hinge on having the outline ready by Nov. 1, because if it's not, I know I won't feel motivated to stick out the entire month.

It's kind of funny that the busy weekend started out with taking a half-day off from work on Friday. That wasn't even my choice - the entire studio had the half-day off because they took us to see Ant-Man! It's a bit of a tradition for our studio to go see opening-day Marvel movies, as well as some other highly-anticipated non-Marvel geek movies. We used to be a Disney studio, and one of the Disney perks was that they'd rent out a theater for the company on opening day for the Marvel movies. (Being a gaming company, that was the major draw; there wasn't much interest in other Disney movies among the employees.) Well, they'd do that for the locations in the big cities. For a small studio in a small town, they'd buy a bunch of tickets at one of the local theaters. Anyway, though we're no longer working for Disney, it's still a tradition and Ant-Man is the newest one.

Bottom line: Go see Ant-Man. Despite my reservations (Ant-Man? Really? And it's not even Hank Pym as Ant-Man! Who cares?), I really enjoyed it. Don't expect a heavy, meaningful movie: it was a hell of a lot of fun!

Slightly longer review behind the cut, for those of you who don't like spoilers (like me).

Yesterday was a parade, and this time, the snare drummer was absent, so I had to step up and play snare drum in the parade and in the following concert. Yikes. But I have to say, I'm pretty pleased at how I did. Parades are pretty easy, as all I have to do is keep up the marching cadence between songs and then during songs, just kind of make things up. I don't know why, but I had a bit of trouble keeping step with the songs - I had to do this last year and didn't have a problem then - but we're an informal marching band and there are quite a number of people who don't even step in time to the music, so no one's watching me and I don't have to be so self-conscious.

The concert was much harder. There were a couple of songs with snare drum solos, and you have to understand, I'm not a drummer. I'm a terrible musician in the first place, I only play drums during the summer band, and I don't practice, and I've only been doing this since last summer, so that's about four months of playing drums without practicing. I managed to muddle through the solos just fine, happily enough. The most fun songs, at least for me, were the rock and swing songs, and I did a great job on "Big Spender" (the director told me so afterwards!), but at the end of one of the songs, during the big finale, I lost one of my sticks. But I was having so much fun that it was just funny - the director nearly lost it when he saw what happened - and I managed to grab the stick back and finish the last couple of measures in time. This is the kind of thing that creates wonderful memories.

The only problem with parades and concerts is that they just blast me for the rest of the day. The marching harness for the drum is bloody heavy, and I have bruises on my leg where they hit the drum every step. I'm better now after a night's sleep (one of the best sleeps I've had in a while - a whole seven hours!), and happy to relax for the day.
