This was a surprisingly difficult piece to write, and I'm not entirely sure why. Weeping Angels are not easy to portray in text, but on the other hand, they didn't need to be scary here - I didn't need to try to evoke the flashing images of attacking angels like the show does. I just needed to convey a sense of fear and urgency on Martha's and Mickey's part, and that can be done in dialogue.
I just don't know why this was so hard. It just didn't really work. The original idea was the encounter with the angel and coming up with a mundane way to defeat it. Then I built the rest around it, because, well, angel-shows-up-and-we-defeat-it-like-this is not particularly interesting. But, despite my reservations about it, I don't feel there's much I can do to improve it and so I've posted it. Sometimes you just have to tape it up and ship it, and move on.
I did really enjoy trying to convey fifteen years of backstory into two minutes of unrelated conversation, though. That was a lot better to write (and read!) than dense paragraphs of exposition.
