Maius Intra Qua Extra

There's this feature on Facebook called "On This Day" (actually, they renamed it to "Memories" recently) which shows you your posts from years past for the current month and day. I love this feature, because it's fun trying to figure out what the hell I was talking about seven years ago.

This was today's post:

September 2, 2013 at 9:40 AM: "We've been catching up with the rest of the modern world and finally watching the recent Dr. Who. Christopher Eccleston made a fantastic Doctor! We won't be able to watch the David Tennant seasons until November, and I've been pumping (my husband) for as much info as I can about the old series, to put more of the show in context. Fandom, here I come!"

It's been five brilliant years.

From looking at my stories, I think it's pretty obvious what my two favorite episodes of Doctor Who are: "Human Nature"/"The Family of Blood" and "The Day of the Doctor." Most of my writing right now is about the former, but the latter has historically been very compelling.

I think I've seen "The Day of the Doctor" at least fifteen times now. I saw it in the theater when it came out, because we don't have TV service, so I couldn't watch it at home, but I think the theater was the right way to do it: in 3-D, with 300 other fans. I went in my Fifth Doctor costume (my husband wasn't feeling well that day and declined to dress in his Fourth Doctor costume), and I was the only classic Doctor cosplayer there. I also downloaded it on BBC iPlayer that week and watched it every day until the download expired. Then I watched it at least once a week for the next couple of months. I've watched it less often since then (I don't think I've seen it in over a month now), but we're finishing our re-watch of the Eleventh Doctor this week!

Back in November, I had only just started to write my own stories. I had seen "The Girl in Fireplace" for the first time in October (I should write an entry on my introduction to Doctor Who sometime soon; I don't think I've written it already) and it inspired me to write my story "The Man in the Fireplace," but I thought that was just a fluke and hadn't thought about writing any more. Then I saw "The Day of the Doctor," and again, I was inspired.

One of the things that TDotD left hanging was the War Doctor's regeneration into the Ninth Doctor, because Mr. Eccleston had declined to appear in the episode, and so I wrote "The Dawn of the Doctor" to tie TDotD to "Rose." I hadn't expected to ever write another story or share any of them with anyone other than my husband, but I enjoyed writing those two first stories so much, I kept going, and that prompted to me to create my accounts on ffnet and whofic. I really haven't looked back since.

I wrote "The Message" quite a bit later, on an idea proposed by my husband, about how they got the First Doctor to start the calculations they needed. And then even later, I started another series on a similar idea, which I will post here when I get to it. I think, though, that there's a lot to revisit in TDotD, something I'd like to do someday. I'd like to expand on Osgood's and the other scientist's backgrounds. And I wonder how the Zygons are going to do living among humans? Not to mention the War Doctor's background. And I think the Doctor getting into Elizabeth's good graces would be a fun romp.

I have so many other story ideas waiting for me, so I doubt I'll come back to TDotD any time soon, but someday. It was just such a fun, wonderful, inspiring episode.
