In a meme-y mood...
Feb. 2nd, 2016 03:19 pm...and also in a "Me! Me!" mood.
Well, not really. I just happened to see these two memes and felt like extending the chain.
Meme in which I talk about me...
From
lost_spook (though it seems to be missing #7, so I renumbered them). I love looking at my works on AO3 and evaluating them.
AO3 Stats Meme
1. Your 3 fanfics with the most comments:
I think the coolest thing about the comments on The Actor is that they include one from a mother who told me that her autistic daughter loves the story and keeps it on her Kindle so that she can read it any time. I teared up when I read that.
2. Your 3 fanfics with the most kudos:
This set of three is going to repeat over and over. I'm pretty much a one-trick pony - I got my one good story written, with tons (well, tons as far as I'm concerned; not that many, really) of kudos and comments and whatnot, and then the rest are pretty average. All of the stats on The Actor dwarf those of the other two by 4x or more. And Calling the Doctor cheated - it's got a bunch of numbers only because it's a collection of short stories, so it has repeat visitors each time I post a new one (which hasn't happened in over year, sadly).
3. Your oldest fanfic:
When I first started writing, I posted on ffnet and Teaspoon. When I made an account on AO3, I wasn't sure how to post or how it all worked, so I chose an indifferent (in my eyes, anyway) piece to post first. Thus, my first posted on AO3 is not my first written.
4. Your latest fanfic:
I wrote this for
who_at_50's fanwork-a-thon back in November. That's how little I've been writing recently. Actually, I've been writing every day - just never on the same thing two days in a row, and I haven't actually finished anything.
5. The fanfic you're most proud of:
There's no comparison. I think it's the best thing I've written. Honourable mention to "Every Mirror". And I really, really like Neighbours. I still haven't figured out why.
6. Your longest fanfic:
Coming in at just above 50k words.
7. Your 3 fanfics with the most bookmarks:
Oh, look. These three again.
8. Your Top 3 Crossover fics:
Well, to be honest, I've only written four crossover fics. Mistaken Identity was the first multi-chapter fic I wrote. A bit trope-y (doppleganger crossover, anyone?) but rather fun, I think. "A Splendid Day" is a companion piece to it. Then I wanted to write an entry for a dA group's "trope" prompt. I chose doppleganger crossover and chose DW with Broadchurch, producing "Bloody Doctors!" but it was too long for the prompt, so I had to start again and produced "Ravenous".
Funny thing is, "Bloody Doctors!" is my most successful one-shot story, going by kudos. I still get kudos for it every couple of weeks, while all of my other one shots are silent. I have not figured out why. It really isn't that remarkable a story.
Meme in which you ask about me...
Mercilessly ganked from
paynesgrey. I would love if you would choose a letter and ask me to talk about the topic. I'll warn you not to choose the Tumblr topics, because I don't really do anything on Tumblr, so the answer will be "I have no idea." The rest, I'll give an honest try.
Pick a letter and I will ramble. Post to your own journal so we can ramble together! Co-ramble!

Date: 2016-02-03 07:01 pm (UTC)U: Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.
I'm going to expand this question and name one major (recurring) character and one minor (guest) character from each fandom. It's more fun this way; otherwise, I'd just ramble on about the Doctor. I don't know if I can name the top favorite minor character from a fandom, so it'll be "a" favorite.
Doctor Who
The Tenth Doctor: Oh, surprise, surprise! I don't know if it's possible to be a real fan of DW and not consider the Doctor to be your favorite character, but why the Tenth Doctor in specific? First, because he embodies what captivated me about the show in the first place, that the Doctor is an explorer and a traveler, interested in seeing the entire universe and helping out where he can; it's the reason that the Eighth Doctor is also one of my favorites. Second, because from the very beginning, we saw his inner struggle against corruption and self-importance, and that's what defined his life and his relationships, ending in his downfall on Mars and attempt to redeem himself in "The End of Time". Of all the Doctors, his character actually developed - grew and changed - and that's what drove his story.
Neeva: Neeva was a study in the destruction of faith. At the beginning of "The Face of Evil", he's the Sevateem's priest, who talked to the god Xoanon and did its bidding. As the story progressed, he discovers that Xoanon is not a god, and Neeva has to come to terms with that and the fact that the life his tribe has been leading was a lie. In the end, he sacrifices himself to destroy the "god" that had artificially created the war between the Tesh and the Sevateem, freeing both peoples.
Firefly
Kaylee: It's really hard to choose a favorite in this show, because all of the characters were designed so well. My husband would choose Jayne, I'm sure. Kaylee's my favorite because she feels very real and normal to me. All of the Serenity's crew have some skill that they are stellar at, and Kaylee's no exception, but most of the rest have a strong drive to achieve something in particular. Kaylee doesn't. She's this normal woman who's happy with her life and loves her cute things and frilly dresses, but also happens to be the best mechanic in the system. I also love that she's naive, unlike everyone else on the ship.
Saffron: I was going to list Niska here, because he's just fascinatingly cruel, but then I remembered Saffron. Selfish and amoral as well as skilled and confident, she was a great antagonist for Mal and the crew. In her second episode, they did a great job forcing the crew to work with her while trying to keep her at arm's length.
Harry Potter
Snape: As far as I'm concerned, the Harry Potter books were about Snape; they're really about his story. There just happened to be this other character whose name they put on the book cover. Thinking about it, I love Snape for the same reason I love Alec Hardy: both characters are objectionable on the outside, but on the inside, are brave and dedicated to their cause. Snape is complex and very realistically portrayed. He is on the side of good, but he is arrogant and disdainful. He doesn't like other people, doesn't even respect them. Even though he's sworn to protect Harry and to bring down Voldemort, he still hates Harry and what he represents - Lily's refusal of himself and her choice of James - and very humanly torments Harry for it. Basically, you can't judge a book by its cover.
Neville: I'm listing Neville as a minor character because he doesn't appear very much over the course of the books, but he certainly becomes major in the last book. You want character growth? Neville is character growth personified. He's a beautiful example of an insecure, tortured child who learns from his experiences and becomes a strong, brave adult. The seed was planted in the very first book, as Neville stands up to Harry, Hermione, and Ron, and blooms into the man that stands up to Voldemort and beheads Nagini.

Date: 2016-02-04 03:48 am (UTC)But Snape (out of all of them) was so, so human. He was amazing and awesome and bigger than life, but he was also human on a level that us Muggles can understand. He was Voldemort all over again, but one with a conscious need to try to be better. He was bitter and hateful, but he tried anyway. He helped bring the Death-Eater to their knees. I just...love Snape. And I adored Rickman's perfect portrayal of him...

Date: 2016-02-04 05:43 pm (UTC)It just occurred to me that my disinterest in Harry is demonstrated in my writing. I've written two HP fanfics (one is a crossover with DW). Neither involve Harry (the crossover mentions him obliquely), and one is specifically about Snape.
