shivverGah. I feel sick.
Layoffs today. Sigh. And yet, that's not what I'm sick about. I didn't get laid off, thankfully (though I'm expecting I will be come February - I'm ready for that), and neither did anyone in my studio, but a handful of people at the corporate office did. One of them is a good friend, so, about an hour or so after the announcement, I IMed him and told him that I was sorry, and asked if there was anything I could do, and he replied, "With what?" Turns out, he's on PTO today and had no idea what had happened.
He, of course, started asking me what was going on, and I asked my boss what to do, and he said don't answer him. So I fled - hard-stopped the IM client (which doesn't have an "exit" or a "log off" button, for some reason), got off Facebook, etc. And then sat here and tried to work, feeling like throwing up.
Sigh.
I finally returned to Facebook and messaged him, telling him that I couldn't just leave him hanging, and told him to call in to his manager, because I can't tell him what's going on. I haven't heard back from him since - I assume he's having his termination meeting now, over the phone.
I really feel terrible. But I think I did the right thing. I don't think it's right for me to turn my back on him once I made the initial mistake of inadvertently letting him know that something was wrong. The news really shouldn't have come from me, but I had to take responsibility for it once it happened.
