Fanfic Writing Meme #25
Jul. 21st, 2014 11:20 amWe watched "Human Nature"/"Family of Blood" for the first time in a while last night. I still tear up every time I watch it. It amazes me how much this episode affects me every time.
25. Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your fic? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?
In general, I don't listen to music while I write. Music distracts me, because I tend to sit and actually listen to the music, rather than just have it in the background. I think it's because I play music, so when music is playing, I like to analyze what I'm hearing (especially orchestral music, and since I usually have on Murray Gold's beautiful DW instrumental pieces, I'm always hooked on listening directly to it). More recently, I've been learning to play percussion, so when there's music playing, I'm often listening to the percussion and thinking about how to play what I'm hearing. (I love the drums in This is Gallifrey!) Other times, music will affect what I'm thinking about, distracting me away from what I need to be thinking about while writing.
I don't need complete quiet, though. Having grown up with a bedroom with a window (usually open when it was hot) on the busiest street in the town, I'm used to filtering out background noise. What distracts me are sounds that require me to think about them - music is one thing, my husband talking is the other. Everything else I just ignore.

Date: 2014-07-21 07:21 pm (UTC)I'm the same as you as far as music is concerned, except that I'm not a musical person (I mean not an artist… not too sure about that phrasing…), so I'm distracted most of all by songs that have lyrics, and songs I love too much and whose rhythm are likely to whirl me away…
