Introducing my new Funko Pop! mod - DI Alec Hardy! Pic and description under the cut.


Broadchurch is certainly not the kind of show that spawns merchandise, so I had to make my own DI Hardy Pop. I used the head from Booker DeWitt (Bioshock Infinite) pretty much straight from the guillotine - I drybrushed the hair to add a bit of red, as Hardy's hair is pretty ginger in the sunlight. I wanted the scruff to be darker, but I'm not confident enough in my color mixing to do that. The body is from Harvey Bullock (Gotham), and it needed a complete repaint.

Probably the most difficult part of making one of these mods is the reconnection of the two body parts. The bottom of the head is a disk through which the neck piece is thrust. In the case of the DI here, the disk curved, making it difficult to fit back into the bottom of the head, so I had to glue it back into place, and it still doesn't fit correctly. This is making the shoulders fit snugly against the head, so it can't actually turn like it is supposed to.

All in all, the process took about three hours, mostly for the painting. During this time, I got a couple of choice comments off as my husband asked me what I was doing, with answers of "Slopping paint on Tennant's crotch" (yes, he asked at exactly the right time) and then later, when I was about to reconnect the pieces, "Heating up Tennant's head." I'm not sure I'll be allowed to do any more crafts ever again.

He might look too strong and healthy for the season 1 scruff, but apart from that, he could be the official merchandise ;) Amazing!

Thank you!! :) And yes, he's a bit too healthy. Though, in season 2, he was more healthy-looking, but the scruff was longer and darker.

I have to say, Gracepoint may not have been anywhere near as good as Broadchurch, but they did a better job making DT look ill and exhausted.

It's interesting that you say that, because Carver seemed more ill to me as well but to me, it's part of differences between them. Carver seemed more ill probably because he had injections while Hardy took pills (were injections more dramatic?) and mentally he seemed exhausted and resigned, maybe even depressed. He keeps working on the case but seems to feel generally beaten in life and can't be nice to other people. Hardy on the other hand connects with people more, seems more desperate to solve the case, is more angry than resigned and seems to enjoy himself from time to time. I only saw Gracepoint once but I thought differences in the scripts, David's acting with different actors and even different hair and make up made Carver a different character from Hardy.

Yes, I agree. Carver and Hardy were very different characters, which was refreshing to see. Carver seemed to be more aggressive toward other people, while Hardy seemed... indifferent, I think, is the word. No, more like non-sympathetic. He didn't try to be mean or arrogant, but instead simply never thought about how others might react to his actions.

One other thing that really distinguished the two shows is that Carver and Miller never seemed to click, as either uncomfortable friends or as coworkers. They just seemed to be two people who happened to be working on the same case. Whereas, of course, Hardy and Miller's friendship - or whatever you might want to call it, as that word is really not adequate to describe it - is the core of Broadchurch, around which the rest of the brilliant story was woven.

Yes, exactly. I was open to a different relationship, as Gracepoint Miller was so different than Broadchurch Ellie, but nothing really happened between them. There was no spark, no understanding, while David's and Olivia's each scene is gold.
