It's near the end of the June. If you know anything about the way companies are run, you know that this is not only the end of a month, but also the end of a financial quarter, which means that it's the time when a company reviews what it's done for the past three months and plans out what it's going to do for the next three months, including make projections on revenue, decide how many new people to hire, etc.

I'm currently managing one project and the company just bought a new project which I will be moving onto as soon as possible. Since we don't have anyone to take my place on the first project yet, my boss is acting manager on the second project until I can move over, which will be in something like 1-2 months. So, he's taking care of all the details of project 2.

Well, on Monday, he announced he's taking a vacation for a week with his family, going to Disneyland, starting in two hours, and two hours later, he was out the door. Well, two hours and fifteen minutes later, because we managed to corner him before he snuck out to find out what we had to cover for him. He tells us that we have to go to a few of his meetings, but not all of them, and we don't have to worry at all about project 2. Okay, good.

Of course you know what happened. Not long after he left, we start getting emails saying turn in this forecast or that quarter-end summary, attend this meeting, or compile this document, all due at different times this week, and includes both project 1 and project 2. We're already scrambling to get what's needed for project 1, and of course we have no idea how to do any of this stuff for project 2 - where to get the data, who might be able to answer the questions about it, etc. And then, about fifteen minutes ago, I'm told that at the full-company meeting in three hours, I have to make a presentation about project 2!

I am half completely lost and half livid at my boss (and the rest of the studio is none too happy with him, too). He honestly gave us no warning about this vacation, and has made it very clear that he won't be checking email/phone more than once a day and won't be answering back if it isn't convenient for him. One of these meetings that we have to provide data and documents for is "what your projects are expected to do for the next three months" and once the meeting's over, it's set in stone and we'll be held to those expectations, and we're going into it without full data on anything. It's a meeting that only my boss attends, so no one else knows how the meeting goes or what we need for it. We are going to look like complete idiots in it! And then we're going to come out with expectations based on nothing realistic, and our performance reviews and bonuses (not just the managers in the meeting, but everyone in the studio) will be based on them.

This is such a cf.

Edit: The brownies in the breakroom are paying for this WITH THEIR LIVES.

Isn't that image just awesome? I don't know where I found it, but I had to grab it as soon as I saw it. I made it one of the rotating pics on my desktop, and every time it comes up, I start laughing.

And your interpretation of it just had me chortling at my desk. I got some weird looks. It's definitely exactly how I feel today.

Oh god, what a MESS! Your boss seriously screwed up there. I'm sorry you're all having to deal with the consequences, how stressful and unpleasant :(

Thanks! Yes, he's going to get an earful from a bunch of us about this. At least it's all over now, and it didn't go too badly. The last major meeting was on Thursday, and I can tell you none of us did any real work on Friday. ;)

Yeah. He's usually a good guy, a great boss, and a fine leader, so this was completely out of the blue and uncharacteristic. We're still floored that he did it at all.
