So, with bas_math_girl and serenityslady displaying their DT pics and userpics, I decided it was high time for me to add one of my favorite DT character. After all, I did pay for this account and should have more than two userpics active! So, while looking through images of DI Hardy on the web, I found the animated gif I wanted to take the image from, and while paging through the frames, I found the following, and I just had to share.

That is priceless. I can imagine DT making faces between takes, just to loosen up the muscles in his face. Frowning constantly has to be burdensome!

I've heard that he often jumps and jogs to loosen himself up. I'm sure he does facial exercises, too.

I know! There are a lot of actors that have plastic faces like him - Rowan Atkinson is a prime example. I just love that DT uses it for drama rather than comedy, though he is also a superb comic actor when he wants to be.

It's called being extremely lazy and having very little talent in making images. Together, they synergize into never coming up with any userpics to upload!

I think I'm misusing it a little (semi on purpose though). When he says it it seems to mean something like "getting people to do what you want," like when he talked about Billie fluttering her eyelashes and said that "buttered many parsnips", or when he showed up at an audition in LA without ID and RTD suggested he could have shown them a copy of Doctor Who Magazine, and he said "that butters no parsnips here." I dunno if it's just David being weird, or if it's actually an authentic Scots idiom, or what. It's a cute phrase though.

My understanding is that the phrase is "whatever butters your parsnips", which means the same as "whatever floats your boat" - whatever makes you happy or satisfies you. So when he said "it butters many parsnips" about BP's eyelash flutter, I believe he meant (or at least intended to imply) that it really turned him on. And then for the RTD thing (which I hadn't heard about and made me laugh), he meant that unlike someone like Tom Cruise bulling his way into somewhere by using his famous name to make everyone swoon, no one in the US knows him or DW and would not swoon about him in DWM.

I don't know if "butters many parsnips" is an accepted phrase. I can absolutely imagine that it's a turn that DT made himself, because he has such a strong and inventive grasp on language. I love listening to his interviews because he weaves his words with so much imagination. I really wish I could emulate that, if only because I'm writing a character that should have his voice and speak with such beauty.
