My husband and I drink way too much soda. His poison of choice is Diet Pepsi, while I prefer non-caffeinated drinks. I happen to really like Diet Ginger Ale, but I also like Diet 7-Up, which makes it a kind of a pain at the grocery store, to always have to buy two sleeves of different drinks.

It's become a rule in our house that when he asks me what I want to drink, I must answer "Rude" if I want ginger ale or "Not ginger" if I want 7-Up.

Have you ever seen the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Darmok"? That's the one with the aliens who speak entirely in references to their legends. (For example, "Temba, his arms wide" means "This is a gift for you", because in the legend, Temba gave a gift and held his arms open.) Sometimes life in our house is exactly like that episode. :)

... and I thought me and my husband were the only one. It's like a sentence referring to a certain shared experience or joke becomes meta-level code for the whole thing.

Oh, we do this all the time! Sometimes our friends just stare at us when we say something that's completely natural to us but makes no sense to anyone else, because it's some shared experience that would take too long to explain.

And then there's the playfulness. One evening, I came home from band rehearsal, walked into the house, and yelled out, "HELLO, STONEHENGE!" He came running down the stairs and strafed me going "Pew pew pew!" like the spaceships circling over the Doctor's head.

*snort* That's funny; I love it!

I'm not much into carbonated drinks, nor sweet ones. So I drink mostly water, and sometimes hot tea. We do have a SodaStream, so we make seltzer, but I really prefer water.

Yeah, I enjoy my sweet carbonated drinks too much. I always have soda at home, but water when we go out, since restaurants don't offer non-caffeinated diet drinks. I do like tea - black, not green - but I try to stay away from that because of the caffeine, too.

I generally do decaf tea (black or herbal), although I do like my Irish Breakfast tea as a treat.

I hate the fizz going up my nose... and I would never drink diet anyway. If I'm going to sweeten, I'd use sugar. The point is moot anyway, since water is my beverage of choice.

Still your "rude" "not ginger" was hilarious! Nice that your hubby gets it.
