My husband and were just discussing a fic I'm working on, and he had this to say:

"No, it can't end happy. That's not how any universe with Tennant in it works."

He kinda has a point. His "happy" usually comes with a cost, or after a struggle (I'm talking about his characters, not the man. HE has a beautiful wife, a wonderful family, and seemingly never-ending offers of delicious parts to play).

What we did on our holiday? Does that count as happy?

Wildly happy? Perhaps not. Hopeful or very hopeful on the happy front? Yes, it can. Much Ado About Nothing proves it.

Tragedies don't count. By their very nature. If you know anything about the story, you know what you're getting yourself in for and go to see how it'll be shown.

Well, Much Ado About Nothing ends happily, doesn't it? And there's Blackpool. But I can see where your husband is coming from. I think in general drama works better without happy endings and those that come without a cost. And David chooses good scripts so his characters are rarely happy in the end. But there's always Much Ado About Nothing to watch if one needs happy end :)
