The RSC's "Shakespeare Live!"
Apr. 15th, 2016 09:25 amIn case you didn't know, this year is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, and the Royal Shakespeare Company is putting on a celebration in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 23rd called "Shakespeare Live!" It will be hosted by David Tennant and Catherine Tate, and broadcast live to cinemas in the UK and Europe.

We in the US don't have to miss out. Fathom Events (the same company that handled the in-theater presentations of "The Day of the Doctor" and "Deep Breath"/"Dark Water", as well as the David Tennant Celebration back in 2014) will be showing the "Shakespeare Live!" in the US, a month late (May 23) and called "The Shakespeare Show" (because apparently Americans need a cheesy title to make us attend this kind of thing).

Date: 2016-04-16 12:24 am (UTC)What is also nice if you see it in the theatre and then in the cinema again. We did that with Benedict Cumberbatch as Hamlet. In the theatre I paid especially attention to the background and things happening there as I knew in the cinema we would get close-ups. But I had not expected the camera zooming in so much that it felt very intimate, as if he was alonen on stage - which he was not, there were others around. This is how much a camera can change perspective.
I also saw David Tennant in Much Ado about nothing and Richard II. It's so great to have the official download resp. the DVD to be able to watch it again and again. As one theatre visit simply isn't enough! With MAAN, I said right when we were leaving the theatre that I want to go again. Thankfully they raffled off cheap leftover tickets so we were able to go a second time.

Not sure what you mean with David Tennant celebration - did I miss something?
Did I already link you to my stage door pictures?

I hadn't been a fan yet when he did Hamlet. Probably for the best, I would have been devastated to miss him when he had the back surgery. It was bad enough with getting the wrong Barrowman that first Panto night when John had fallen from the horse on stage and had to be brought to the hospital. But he was back the next evening, the trooper he is. We had been really worried that he may be seriously hurt.
I'm so glad that people who don't have the time or money to travel can at least watch MAAN in that official download. We fought hard, I never sign a petition but I signed one to get this on DVD. I would have been sorry for you all to miss it, as it is so great. I need to watch Richard II on DVD again as well with subtitles, I missed a lot in theatre. Shakespeare is even more difficult when you are not a native speaker ;)
I sure hope you'll get your chance one day! Or, who knows, maybe he'll do something in America instead!
