I don't think Ten was aware at all about any mixed messages he was giving to his companions. When Martha finally pointed it out to him in her final speech, you can see on his face the moment he realized what he'd done to her. On the other hand, I am convinced that when he messes with incidental people, he's doing it on purpose at least sometimes. (And there are times that he doesn't realize that he's being strange.)
