I've decided to be honest with myself and not attempt NaNoWriMo this year.

It just doesn't work for me. Yes, I can write 50k words in a month if the story idea grabs my imagination - Blue Rain proved that earlier this year during Camp NaNo - but if I don't have an idea that compelling, then November just becomes a ball of stress. For me, writing is fun. It's my main hobby and my way of celebrating the television show that grabbed my hand and whispered Run! in my ear. I don't need external forces prodding me to write, especially if I don't feel like it, and I don't need to prove that I can construct a coherent story. And I certainly don't need to turn writing into a job or a chore.

That said, I'm in a bit of a writing lull at the moment. I'm still coming off the high from Blue Rain, and though DW still occupies most of my waking thoughts, I haven't felt inspired lately. It doesn't help that most of the chatter around here (meaning my life, not here on LJ) is about Class, which hasn't interested me enough to stream yet, and Twelve and Bill, which honestly doesn't interest me at all. I do have a long fic that I want to get back in gear on, but the problem is that it's set somewhere in Series 4, but I'm honestly tired of writing about the Doctor and Donna. (Sorry!) At least, it's a variation on that partnership that I hope will be interesting. I'm currently working on my fic for [livejournal.com profile] who_at_50, which is a welcome break. Not sure what I plan to do after that.

I'm also a bit distracted from writing at the moment by video games. Yes, I usually play Guild Wars 2, which takes up more time than I'd like, but right now I'm kind of off that game as well. I haven't been playing anything else, but then the remake of Dragon Quest VII came out. I played the original and it was one of my favorite games ever. After playing it again, well, all I can say is that I'm a very different person than I was back then. This time, it was boring, primarily because of the pacing. The overall story is a string a smaller stories woven together by the overplot, but oh my god... For example, one story might involve exploring a dungeon to get some artifact, and it might take an hour to do. The next story might consist entirely of running around the town to talk to people (and sometimes, after the conversation, they walk off-screen, so you have to go find where they went) in a scripted event in which you have no choices, and it might take three hours. No kidding. Three hours of walking back and forth tapping "A" in front of NPCs. And their story wasn't all that interesting.

To top it all off, I played the game for thirty hours, trying to give it the chance to become the wonderful game I remembered, and only just as I decided to quit did it finally let me select classes for my characters. Yes - after thirty hours, my characters could finally start doing things in combat that were more than just "hit monster with dagger".

Wow, I didn't mean for this to turn into such a rant. :)

Anyway, I abandoned DQ7 and picked up Etrian Odyssey IV, which I purchased when it came out but never actually played. EO is one of my favorite game series ever, and this game has been so fun. However, a new slew of games are coming out soon, so I'll be putting this down next week. The newest Harvest Moon should arrive on my doorstep within the week, and then later this month, Pokémon Sun/Moon. I have no idea when I'll have time to write.

Work's been going pretty well, with lots of interesting things to do. The workmate I complained about a few weeks ago is still a big baby, but I just try to keep my head down and my headphones on.

I also need to dedicate myself to listening to all of the Gallifrey audio series, because all four of the main characters - Romana, Leela, Braxiatel, and Narvin - are going to be at Gallifrey One this year, and it's not far off. If I'm going to drool all over them, it needs to be educated drooling.

Oh, and then there are some Christmas presents I want to make that I need to get started on, and the Romana cosplay I'd like to create (though as I think about it, I'd rather do femme!Narvin).

So yes, lots to do, and so little time.
